Interview and Evaluation

Category: ADMISSIONS

Ensuring that a potential student candidate is ready and has the right fit for the Ruby Holland School of Music is very important. The interview and evaluation are a measuring tool of the teacher for both student and parents. Enrollment with our School requires a personal and financial commitment. Readiness and complete understanding of expectations are important.

Student Interviews take the form of a 15 minute lesson. Students are tested on level of interest, cognitive and analytical skills, attention, retention and rapport with the tutor. The mood of the interview is a relaxed and encouraging time for each child during which assessment is made of his/her learning–style and background. Parents are also interviewed and given a review of the child's test results. Parents are given a general outline of the Studio, its policies and expectations and detailed information about the Studio and its operations. This is followed by parent questions and answers.

We ask for prospective families and students to plan for at least a minimum of 1 hour and 15 minutes. All interviews are conducted at the Music Studio.

Note: Interviews of TWO or more prospective sibling–students will be conducted separately for 15 minutes each, to avoid sibling rivalry and comparison.

Overall the interview helps to determine parents’ goals, student aptitude, and program placement. Most importantly the interview ensures that the student meets the requirements for acceptance and that parents are given enough information to make an informed decision.
